130. Survey of Ethiopian Immigrants in Ashdod, 2002
Source: Ministry of Immigrant Absorption, Brookdale Institute
In 2001-2002, the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption, in cooperation with local authorities,
established neighborhood centers in 10 cities with large concentrations of Ethiopian-Israelis.
The centers coordinate municipal services and promote the development of services and
programs for these immigrants, while increasing cooperation among various agencies,
pooling resources and fostering community support.
The survey was sponsored by the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption and conducted by the
Myers - JDC - Brookdale Institute. Its goals were to learn about the needs of these immigrants
in a variety of areas, and to provide information inputs for the work of the centers. The
population investigated was the Ethiopian-Israeli households in the neighbourhoods where
the centers have been established. This report presents data from a survey conducted in
three neighbourhoods in Ashdod. Altogether, data were collected from 693 families,
representing 88.5% of the Ethiopian-Israeli families residing in these neighbourhoods. The
data includes education details of family members, labour force participation details, health
issues, welfare and other details. (N=693)
821. Labour Force Survey, 2007
Source: Israel Central Bureau of Statistics
The series of Labour Force Surveys (LFS) held by the ISDC includes all LFS datasets starting
from 1967. The LFS is the principal survey of households conducted by the Central Bureau of
Statistics. The surveys follow the development of the labour force in Israel, its size and
characteristics, the extent of unemployment and other trends. It is also a source of data on
living conditions, mobility in employment, and modes of job seeking. The individual's record
includes a few household details like family size and composition, housing density, domestic
help and place of residence. It holds a full demographic profile of the respondent including
country of birth and parents' country of birth, schooling information, immigration data, detailed
labour force characteristics including hours of work, occupation, economic branch, employees
hired through employment agencies or employment contractors and more. Quite a few items
provide information on the unemployed such as duration of unemployment, last job before
unemployment, modes of job seeking and discouraged workers. Women are also asked
about fertility. The interviewers interview one of the household members from whom they
receive information about him/herself and about the other members of the household.
A random sample of the survey population is generally drawn once a year. A small part of the
sample population whose characteristics hardly change over time is covered by permanent
samples taken from the 1995 Census.
Each household is investigated four times: investigations 1 and 2 are done during two
consecutive quarters, and after a two quarter break the surveying pattern is repeated for
investigations 3 and 4.
For panels in their first and last investigations - face-to-face interview.
For panels in their second and third investigations - telephone interview (for households with
a telephone) using Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI).
